Without a doubt, the Harley Ride In – when members of the H.O.G. , as well as the Christian Motorcyclists Association, visit Bay Cliff with their bikes –  is one of the highlights of the children’s summer! The motorcycles rev and roar in the distance, signaling to the camp their imminent arrival. After  everyone gathers outside their units, the bikers cruise through the camp, making two loops around, before joining the campers and staff for supper.

For over 30 years, members of the Harley Owners Group, or H.O.G. have shown tremendous generosity to Bay Cliff and its campers. Bikers from the Superior Chapter H.O.G. , with support from Bald Eagle Harley-Davidson of Marquette, hold an annual bike raffle, with the proceeds going to Bay Cliff. This year’s prize is a 2019 Harley-Davidson FLDE Deluxe. The Drawing will be held on August 17, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at the Little Lake American Legion Post 349.

When not on display at Econo Foods in Marquette, the motorcycle will be available to view at the following events:

  • June 15 & 16: Ishpeming Gus Macker Tournament

  • June 22: Houghton Bridge Fest

  • June 29: Saint Ignace Car Show

  • July 4: Ishpeming and Big Bay Independence Day Parades

  • July 11: Greywalls Golf Club – BC Open

You can help the H.O.G. support Bay Cliff with a $5 purchase of a ticket for the Harley Raffle. Tickets can be purchased anywhere you see the Harley Raffle Flyer as well as the events listed above (you can also call Bay Cliff at 906-345-9314 and purchase tickets right over the phone!). Winners need not be present to win. A $10,000 cash prize may be substituted for the motorcycle.

“The real cycle you’re working on is a cycle called yourself” – Robert M. Pirsig

Members of the H.O.G. just get it! Year after year, they’ve come to Bay Cliff to provide an opportunity for the children to sit on top of the bikes, blast the horns, and take pictures with their members while wearing custom bandanas. Robert M. Pirsig, author of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, wrote “in a car you’re always in a compartment, and because you’re used to it you don’t realize that through that car window everything you see is just more TV. You’re a passive observer and it is all moving by you boringly in a frame. On a cycle the frame is gone. You’re completely in contact with it all. You’re in the scene, not just watching it anymore, and the sense of presence is overwhelming.”

Truly, the H.O.G. are in the scene with Bay Cliff! They’re not passive observers of our camp – they’re part of it, and their positive presence – for both the campers as well as the staff – is  truly overwhelming! Besides the raffle, they provide custom bandanas to the children, as well as Harley-Davidson t-shirts. The H.O.G. even have a special, one of a kind t-shirt every year specifically for Bay Cliff which the campers themselves help design (be sure to look for the 2019 t-shirt this summer at the BC Office, as well as the at the raffle, where H.O.G. shirts from years past will also be available).

In their decades-long history of lending a helping hand, the H.O.G. have raised over 1.3 million dollars for the campers of Bay Cliff! We are extremely grateful for their support and friendship! Truly, everything the H.O.G. has done for Bay Cliff is a remarkable gift!
